Survival Guide: Dressing for the Heat

| Lingerie

Sometimes, we wonder if meteorologists have it in for us. While we love sun-soaked-hot! hot! hot!-days at the beach, the same heat radiating up from city sidewalks can get a little, how shall we say, unbearable. Cue cups of cold brew for morning commutes, floaty tops and skirts in our #OOTD, and yes, maybe the occasional bamboo folding fan tucked in our purses. When summer heat is at its pinnacle and you’re busting out your fans and ice cubes too, let us remind you: there’s absolutely no better way to keep cool than by slipping into feather-light lingerie. Customers in our stores are always asking us what are our best recs for comfy, light, dare we say, breezy pieces to get them through summer, and we’re more than happy to share our lingerie favorites. If you’re on the hunt for the same, we’ve pretty much got you covered—figuratively, of course, because we seriously cannot take another layer of clothing in this heat. Here are our picks for the end of the dog days. Now, whether or not you keep the ice cube is up to you.

Wireless is always a staple for summer, in the same way that Eggs Benedict is a staple for brunch. We’re pretty ga-ga over them, especially since they offer a bit of support + comfort, all the while adding lovely little details to our wardrobe. We can’t help but incorporate bralettes into our outfits: peeking through sheer blouses or parading through slits or armholes. We love the lace racerback of the Eberjey Colette and the bondage-inspired bands of the Bordelle Cabaret Soft Triangle Bra (a cult favorite). Don’t think you can rock the wireless? Of course you can.

We love a good t-shirt bra with contour cup but maybe not so much during balmy nights. Give those bras a rest for the season and opt for something unlined made with lace or mesh. The material is a little more breathable and light, and you’ll still get support and shape from the band, cup construction, and wire. Some of our favorites include the Gossard Glossies Mesh and the lacy Chantelle Merci. Chalk it up to our Francophilic persuations, but we Journelles are particularly fond of the unlined lace demi.

When the heatwave hits, we all opt for light fabrics in our closets, but that means needing the right underwear to go along with our cotton sundresses and linen dungarees. Most often, we have women dropping by our stores needing to grab-and-go, either for last minute weekend wedding outfit chrises, or when their office outfit turned out to be a smidge see-through (whoops). We’ve seen it all, and some of favorite go-to bottoms include the laser-cut Commando Better Than Nothing thong or our very own Journelle Estelle Hipster to avoid panty lines, and Hanky Panky Retro High Waist thongs for feather light coverage and a little bit of shaping from the high waist (but without a thick layer of fabric).

Bodysuits, Rompers, Slips

Sometimes we can’t help but get down to the barest of all basics when the heat hits, and we are more than happy to just throw on our Only Heart rompers or slips with our sandals or Chucks and call it a day. Or maybe we’ll just go with the bodysuit, toss on a skirt or our favorite overalls then head out. Some of our favorites include the Julianne Samantha slip, the Only Hearts She’s Leaving Town romper, and Natori Feathers bodysuit. They’re all strong statement pieces on their own, because sometimes you just need to keep it simple.
