To us, Beautiful Bottoms has always meant unique prints, gorgeous hues and the most luxurious materials- basically, the perfect way to show sophistication without stuffiness. Lauren + Poppy started the line in 2009, and this year, they’ll begin a rebranding process that’ll change the name from Beautiful Bottoms to ASCENO, bringing along a more chic and grown up aesthetic. The ladies were able to take a breather between their travels (for fun), travels (for business) and the next step in development of their lingerie and swim lines, to chat with us and give us the deets.
Name: Lauren Skerritt + Poppy Sexton-Wainwright
Provenance: Designed in London, UK
When did you launch your brand?
We launched Beautiful Bottoms in 2009 when we were in our second year at Newcastle University. We were both working on a business module and realized we shared the same vision for a company, so decided to do a business plan together. We wanted to create a brand that was about laid back sophistication, relaxed silhouettes and exciting prints at an accessible price point.
Tell us about the transition from Beautiful Bottoms to ASCENO.
The brand has evolved with us over the last five years and become more of a lifestyle brand. When we launched Beautiful Bottoms, we designed printed silk lingerie in feminine shapes. The collections saw immediate interest, but the brand really started to grow when we introduced sleep and beachwear. In keeping with the brand’s evolution‚ Beautiful Bottoms is now being rebranded as ASCENO. It’s name we feel is more in keeping with the energy and essence of our collections.
Describe your brand ethos
The ASCENO collections encapsulate the relaxed elegance of their woman. With its emphasis on quality fabrics‚ vibrant digital prints‚ and contemporary silhouettes; the ASCENO woman can easily pivot between urban city breaks and exotic luxury travels. ASCENO‚ a combination of our mothers’ maiden names‚ reminds us of Greek goddesses. ASCENO evokes thoughts of the sea‚ travel‚ femininity‚ and strength – all key attributes of the brand.
What’s the ASCENO girl like?
Relaxed, feminine, sophisticated, free-spirited, fun!
Your prints are always gorgeous! How do they come to life?
Poppy and I sit down and brainstorm together. We create a mood board with our ideas, colors and print inspiration for the season. Then we start designing the prints and playing with colors. We have a lot of fun designing the collections for ASCENO. We are currently working on AW15 which is super far ahead, but it’s going to be beautiful!
How do you balance lingerie and swim?
We treat them as separate collections and work on them at different times to keep a clear head. However, the swim and sleep collections always have prints that transfer across the categories and the inspiration always comes from the same place. For SS15, we took inspiration from the urban landscape. A plush palette of rose‚ sky blue‚ and mint green are paired alongside vibrant orange‚ turquoise‚ and lime. The digital prints key to the collection range from abstract skyscrapers in untraditional repeats, to kaleidoscopic florals‚- these are all expressed in whimsical color combinations.
Best way to find inspiration when you’re in a pinch?
We take a lot of ideas from our travels and we’re super lucky to travel to cool, new places. We also spend a lot of time on Pinterest, which is a great place to start.
