If there’s one thing we’ll miss about summer, it’s the tomatoes. Truth: We Journelles know how to make the most of any and all heirloom varieties. Come to think of it, we’re pretty savvy with Beefsteak and your run-of-the-mill-but-still-delicious “sauce” ‘maters too. Even with our feet firmly in tall boots, we can’t help but hold on to the summer months via the last bit of ultra-ripe tomatoes. And since we’ve sufficiently stocked our freezers with Jersey’s best (blanched + peeled, natch) for winter meals of Sunday gravy, we turn our tastebuds to the cocktail to help us savor summer’s waning bounty. Enter the Hot Tomato Vodka Cocktail.
And yes, this cocktail is as hot-yet-cool and utterly chic as it’s name (and looks for that matter) suggests. Hence why the ONLY sartorial pairing is Chantal Thomass’ equally hot/cool Columbine set. Now, pass us that shaker.
The Hot Tomato Vodka Cocktail
2 ounces Stoli Hot
2 cherry tomatoes, plus extra to garnish
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
1 thin slice green pepper
Muddle cherry tomatoes in a shaker.
Add vodka, lemon juice and simple syrup and shake with ice.
Strain into rocks glass over ice and garnish with cherry tomatoes and green pepper.
