Like pegged pants or Nicki Minaj, bourbon is one of those things that you either love or hate. We’re in that rare camp of ladies that love all three, but, out of all of them we must say we are especially fond of bourbon. It’s a triple threat; sweet, smoky + has a kick. It’s one of those drinks that’s great during the winter (with some hot spiced cider and perhaps a hot spiced companion), but equally awesome during the summer with an ice cube or two (or fifty). Our favorite treatment of this dark spirit for the sweltering season capitalizes on the bounty of summer fruits. You could do it with blackberries or cherries, but we love it with luscious (and gorgeously colored) blueberries. While you’re enjoying your bourbon + blueberry concoction, we’re going to suggest that you enjoy the Myla Bourbon set, because it’s also a triple threat; sweet (look at that pretty little bow and superbly subtle pattern), smokey (as in smokin’ hot with a matching ruffled suspender) + has a kick (as in wearing it might make you feel a little tipsy).
Blueberry Mint Julep
2 1/2 ounces bourbon
1 ounce mint simple syrup (1/3 cup granulated sugar + 1/3 cup water
+ 1 bunch of mint leaves)
1 ounce mint blueberry puree (2/3 cup fresh blueberries + 2 tbs. mint simple syrup)
fresh mint leaves
Combine bourbon, mint simple syrup and mint blueberry puree together and shake or stir well. Pour over crushed iced and serve with extra mint leaves.
Mint simple syrup
Combine sugar, mint and water together in a small saucepan and heat over high heat until boiling, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low and cook for another minute or so, then set aside to cool completely. Remove mint before using. You can do this ahead of time and store it in the fridge!
Blueberry mint puree
In a mini food processor or blender, combine blueberries and mint simple syrup until pureed.
