Happy (Rainy) Long Weekend!

This rain has kind of been throwing us for a loop. It’s Memorial Day Weekend- it’s supposed to be the big summer kickoff, right? Even though we had visions of beach barbecues and bonfires dancing in our heads, we actually think a mellow, rainy, weekend in might just be what the doctor ordered. A self-imposed, weather-supported staycation, if you will. We’re planning on wrapping up in cashmere (obvi), making ourselves an old fashioned (fave recipe below), putting on this playlist (maybe on repeat), and toasting what will (hopefully) be the last chilly weekend for a while.

Bill Heck’s Old Fashioned Recipe

Ingredients
2 sugar cubes
4 dashes of Angostura bitters
1 lemon wheel
1 lime wheel
1 orange wheel
1 maraschino cherry
1/2 teaspoon grenadine
1/4 cup bourbon or rye whiskey
Club soda
Ginger ale

Preparation
Drop sugar cubes in a rocks glass; sprinkle with bitters and add citrus wheels, cherry, and grenadine. Using a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon, mash just to release fruit juices and oils. Add bourbon. Fill glass with ice cubes; stir to combine. Top with equal parts club soda and ginger ale.

How lovely does it sound to wrap yourself up in some Arlotta Cashmere ?

Take a walk on the wild side

We often think that behaving in a ladylike fashion is a little overrated. Is it considered ladylike to dance on tables? To go skinny dipping? To eat french fries for breakfast? We thought not. And, thus sometimes believe you just have to show your wild side… But we do so love indulging in ladylike trappings- pale pink silks and lovely little bows, delicate laces and fresh flowers, and of course handwritten notes on pretty paper.

Sigh. How to reconcile our inner lady with our inner wildcat? It’s about attitude…and the perfect hint of oh-so-subtle animal print.

Subtle leopard is what we’d wear to an elegant ladies luncheon, where we just might start a tell-all game of “never have I ever”. 4Passionata Casual Sexy

Shimmy + Shake [it 'til you make it]

Someone once told us “fake it ’til you make it”, but we think we’d really rather shake it ’til we make it. Shake it like a tambourine, shake it like a polaroid picture, shake our moneymakers and so on. Could explain our penchant for on-the-spot dance parties.

For a little extra shimmy for our shake, we’re obsessed with these fabulous fringed, feathered, and flounced pieces. Equal parts flapper fierce and showgirl stunning, we dare you to wear one and not shake a tail feather.

Our Love for Lemon

You know that us Journelles have the worst (but really, it’s the best) sweet tooth ever, but sometimes we’re up for a bit of a  sour kick. Luckily, there’s a little thing called lemon. Sweet + sour, with a cheery color to boot, you could say we’re fans of the citrus fruit. If you’re still feeling a bit low key from your Friday night GNI, we totally understand. If you just like lemon + sweets, we reeallyy understand. We’ve decided to forgo the usual Sunday flea market plans and do some good for our heart + soul. Yep, we’re baking. We couldn’t decide what we wanted to bake, so we thought, “why not?” and we’re baking both. Two is better than one, right?

Girls Night In Gone Luxe

1There’s no denying that a good Girls Night Out hits the spot, but sometimes what we really need is a Girls Night In. Especially after a long week of work (yeaahh, even we get tired), there’s nothing quite as right as a night of your best jammies, girly gossip, dance parties + rom-coms with your ladies. We’re Journelle though, so we’re not going to be wearing any ol’ nighties and we’re not just going to eat simple popcorn + ice cream. No, this is going to be the most glamorous slumber party ever. Ladies, get ready for your Friday night GNI-Journelle style.

To wear
Olivia von Halle sets, of course.

Clueless7To Eat
Make this red + yellow pepper pizza from Smitten Kitchen. It’s easy + is going to taste WAY better than take out- we promise. And also, how many delivery pizzas are that pretty? That’s what we thought.
Since you were so good and cooked dinner yourself, why not take it easy and go pint-to-mouth with the ice cream from from the dairy owned by the top men behind Manolo Blahnik? You read that right. The tubs of creamy goodness used to only be available from the dairy itself, but now you can find them (and us) at Dean & Deluca.

To Drink
We’re liking the girly-ness of a Cosmo, but when do we ever not involve bubbly? On that note, we give you a Champagne Cosmopolitan.
Activities (because who doesn’t like activities?)
Paint your nails with these colors that will look ahh-mazing with your luxe Olivia von Halle PJ’s. And because we know there’s going to be a night out in your near future, here’s a DIY lip scrub to get you ready for some smooching. Pucker up!9

Lingerie 101: Demi-Bra Love

You’ve heard us Journelle ladies wax poetic about the perfect lingerie wardrobe before. We’ll admit that our list of “essentials” might be a little, um, above average (yes, we tend to think of ultra-sheer thigh-high stockings and stunning silk pajamas as basic essentials…sorry we’re not sorry?). One thing we can all agree on, though, as absolutely positively necessary, is the demi-bra. Truly flattering on pretty much every shape and totally wearable under t-shirts and trenchcoats alike, it’s easy to understand why the demi is one of our favorite silhouettes ever. Whether we’re feeling daring or dainty, girly or glam, a classic demi is pretty much always just right. How often does that happen? Here, are our favorite ways to wear it right now.

Glitz. Glamour. Gatsby.

“And I like large parties. They’re so intimate.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

Really, we’re a fan of all parties; large or small, but when our Gatsby-esque fete captured Fitzgerald’s sentiments down to the last champagne coupe, we were pretty jazzed. Celebrating the much awaited – seriously, much awaited – premiere of the newest silver screen rendition of The Great Gatsby, we gathered at Journelle’s Upper East Egg (see what we did there?) shop for some good ol’ fun.

Decked in pearls + dresses worthy of Gatsby’s greatest garden party, we got the champagne fountain flowing and began an evening of spectacle + fantasy. Guests were able to try  their luck + spin the wheel of prizes that was filled with goodies like deco jewels courtesy of BaubleBar, lessons at the Vanderbilt Tennis Club, a gift pail from Bottlerocket Wine & Spirit, sets of classic 1920’s lawn games from Yoyo.com and of course, pairs of tickets to see the Gatsby film.

When silk + lace being fawned over, party attendees were posing for pics courtesy of our instant cam (we couldn’t use Instagram- this was the roaring ‘20’s after all). Flaunting the cutest photobooth props since the Prohibition days themselves, guests + Journelles mingled, clinked coupes + modeled.
